Much of the talk between the men are about Sacajawea going into labor. Although disliked at the beginning of the winter because the men though that she would just be extra weight to carry on the expedition, her popularity has increased a ton. I here it is a very slow and painful labor. Knowing that the labor was lasting such a long time a french trader living with the Mandans suggested feeding her rattlesnake rattle saying that it worked every time. Captain Lewis was desperate so he tried it and a few minutes later she gave birth. All the trouble started when the husband of Sacajawea started to demand outrageous things for payment on the expedition and Captain Clark asked them to leave. We all missed Sacajawea and her son a lot. Then the french man asked a man to go over and make negotiations with the Captains and shortly after they hired both of them back.

The new year has come and many of the crew are anxious to continue on with our expedition. To celebrate the new year we went over and danced the the Mandans. I began to notice that Captain Lewis never got our of the fort and always continued working on his notes for Jefferson. Even though the fort was comfortable it was still small and cramped. Food is very hard to find in the winter and sometimes we go to bed hungry. To trade with the Mandans for well needed food The Captains were giving medical care with state-of-the-art medicine.

We Have began building our winter fort. In the cold weather I fond it interesting that the Mandans let there horses come into there house's. A french man showed up in our fort talking to Captain Lewis about being a translator. Captain Lewis was not impressed and said he already had one. The french man said that he could speak fluent Shoshone, and that he also had a young Indian wife that could speak it and help us in cooking off the land and navigating. Captain Lewis agreed even though he would have much rather just had the Indian girl Sacajawea then the french man.

We are all worried about the winter coming and we are scrambling to get a fort built. There was a big Prairie fire a few days ago and many Indian people died thankfully none of us.
