The weather has been awful the last few days, and many of the men have caught colds. On the positive side we have finished our fort. Many Clatsop Indians have been here today to trade food.

Food is very scarce and we are all worried about how we will get over these mountains. We saw a horse today and one of the men quickly shot it. As we approached the camp of the Nez Perce we were greeted by boys, and then led to there camp where surprisingly there were no men.

We have found a hot water basin. All the men are extremely happy to be able to soak there sore bodies in the soothing warm water.

Today has been a very hard day on the expedition. We have nearly freezed to death, nearly fallen off cliffs, and lost lots of supplies. Some of our horses did in fact fall of the cliff and I am suprised that more of them did not die.
